Shielding System

Technical Data

KEPCO document number : Learned (underground)-384 (21.3.17)
Notification of full-scale use of multi-purpose shielding device
(21.3 Underground Operation Division of Distribution Operation Department)

  • The switch is installed to pass through its lower unit and foundation (entrance of cable)
  • Prevention of geothermal heat and condensation caused by temperature difference
  • Corrosion of PCB substrate due to condensation and electrical malfunction of automated device (control unit, terminal) are prevented.
  • Fulfils the role of blocking rodents from entering (cable failure), and easy to maintain.
  • Can be installed regardless of cable standard (sliding comb-shaped frame structure)

Shielded the lower unit of switch to prevent condensation and moisture and rodents inside the switch in winter

  • The control unit accounts for more than 50% of warranty services pertaining to the switch according to the company’s figures
  • Condensation and moisture: failure and accidents due to occurrence of erroneous information and malfunction of the control unit, condensation, and ice formation
  • Rodents : remote control and real-time instrumentation malfunction due to disconnection of control and communication cables. Corrosion of device, cable disconnection, and accidents due to excreta. Stable maintenance not available due to excreta, odor, and gas

Reduced the overall failure rate by more than 30%, improved the internal environment of device and extended its life expectancy with the installation of ground switch shield

Damage due to condensation

Failure and ice formation in the drive unit due to condensation caused by changes in temperature of the switch’s exterior and geothermal heat inside the manhole

  • Breakdown and reduced life expectancy due to corrosion and oxidation caused by melted ice getting inside the control box and the drive unit
  • Malfunction of the control circuit and burning of the board
  • Accidents due to malfunction of real-time instrumentation and erroneous information sent to FRTU
  • Increased accident risks due to large volume of condensation in winter

Damage due to rodent intrusion

  • Power outage due to control cable disconnection
  • Corrosion, burning, and oxidation of the operational and control units due to rodent excreta (risk of rodent infestation)
  • Odors caused by wastewater and excreta, poor working environment (causing vomiting), and avoidance of inspection

Before and after installation

Removed condensation and kept the device interior dry with the installation of shielding film
